Established in 1980, AKFC is a registered Canadian charity and an agency of the worldwide Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).  AKFC is now accepting applications for its 2017-18 International Youth Fellowship Program.

The International Youth Fellowship Program, sponsored by AKFC in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada (GAC), is designed to develop leadership and management skills and promote learning for outstanding young Canadians who have a desire and an aptitude to work effectively in a global environment.

The International Youth Fellowship Program builds on twenty-six years of success during which more than 450 university graduates and young professionals have received focused study and practical experience that has enabled them to pursue leadership positions in their chosen fields. The program, designed as a stepping stone for careers in international development, has proven attractive to young Canadians from a wide variety of disciplines—including law, engineering, journalism, education, business and public administration, and development studies—wishing to embark on global careers.

Each Fellow will attend a one month management seminar in Ottawa, followed by an eight month placement (August 2017 to March 2018) in a country in Africa or Asia working with agencies and partners of the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the world’s largest and most respected international development agencies. Participants will work on various aspects of development, such as health, education, livelihoods and civil society enhancement. Potential host countries may include Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Egypt, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Up to 20 Fellowships will be awarded for the 2017-2018 program.

Participants can apply for one of three streams:

International Development Management (IDM): Fellows benefit from placements in a variety of  organizations, working in fields such as health, education, rural development, and civil society strengthening. Placements include positions in research, project management, communications and monitoring and evaluation.

International Microfinance and Microenterprise (IMM): Fellows gain experience with an organization involved in microfinance or market development, to develop skills in the day-to-day operations and evaluation of these programs.

Young Professionals in Media (YPM): Fellows work as journalists for Nation Media Group, a leading media outlet in East Africa. With opportunities to report in print, broadcast, and digital media, Fellows gain the skills to work effectively in today’s global media environment.

The four week long Management Seminar provides training in development management and leadership, emphasizing innovative and analytical approaches and strategic thinking and planning, related to the overseas placement. The practitioner-oriented seminar is intended to prepare Fellows for their placements and also equip them with skills and perspectives that will benefit them in a career in international development. Workshops are taught by some of Canada’s foremost international cooperation practitioners.
