1439333074_couple-1Interested in gaining practical, degree-relevant community experience this semester?  Fostering, Empowering, Advocating, Together (F.E.A.T.) for Children of Incarcerated Parents is a non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of children and families affected by parental or sibling incarceration.  They are currently looking for volunteers to support with their afterschool drop-in and mentorship programs.

Programs are geared to children and youth 6-18 year olds and will include a range “age/stage/interest relevant”  activities including:  cooking, tutoring, sports, arts and crafts, field trips, team-building activities and games, peer group discussion, and organizing community-based projects to strengthen the community.  The program also includes a mentorship component where interested volunteers can be matched one-on-one with a child or youth where they can work direct with a participant  offering academic support, teaching healthy coping strategies and hands-on opportunities for practicing learned skills and strategies.

Programs will run for 12-weeks from 4-7pm.  Select the day/location that works for you:

Tuesdays: South Etobicoke (Franklin Horner Community Centre http://www.franklinhorner.org We are looking for 10 mentors to provide one-to-one mentorship support for children directly affected by parental incarceration.

Wednesdays: Jane-Sheppard, Jane-Finch area (Ephraim’s Place Community Centre http://ephraimsplace.com/ For our Youth City Centre program, we are looking for 25 mentors who will work together to support at-risk children who have families that have been in conflict with the law. This drop-in program is compromised of tutoring, participating in team-building activities, sports and arts, and a Let’s Chat session where youth and mentors will discuss issues and coping strategies. The focus of this initiative is to build positive leaders and provide a support system for children and youth who are at-risk for becoming in conflict with the law.

For mentors with at least one semester of experience volunteering at FEAT will have the opportunity to become mentors for our Family Visitation Program which facilitates and provides support for children and families visiting loved ones at federal institutions every weekend. We are looking for up to 20 mentors to join our team.

Commitment Volunteers need to be available for the full 12-weeks to participate, starting with mandatory training the week of Sept 21st.  Those who complete the full program will received a letter of participation from Ryerson and F.E.A.T.
